Record Teams meeting and edit the transcript of meeting recording

Currently Teams Meeting recording feature is in preview, when you record the Teams meetings it will capture audio, video, and screen sharing activity. The recording happens in the cloud, and is saved to Microsoft Stream, so you can share it securely across your organization.

Note: Currently PowerPoint sharing, whiteboards, and shared notes are not captured in meeting recordings, but it will be available in feature.

You can record Teams private, channel meetings, and group calls however recording for one-on-one calls are not supported yet. When a meeting recording starts, Teams shows a notification to all participants on the Teams desktop, web, and mobile apps, as well as to people who joined via phone, so that they aware that meeting recording started.

Can I start or stop the Teams meeting recording?

As a meeting organizer you can start or stop meeting recording however there is specific criteria to meet in order to start or stop recording.

  • User must have an Office 365 Enterprise E1, E3, or E5 license.
  • User have teams meeting policy assigned with recording allowed from an IT admin.
  • Guest or from another company user cannot start or stop recording.
  • User must have permission on Microsoft Stream to upload video.

How to start and stop meeting recording?

You as a Teams meeting organizer can easily “Start and Stop” Teams recording

  1. Before starting Teams meeting recording, first join the Teams meeting with audio/video.
  2. Then to start recording, go to the meeting controls and click More options () then you will see, “Start recording (preview)” option highlighted.
  3. Simply click on to “Start recording (preview)”. Refer below screen.

  1. As soon as meeting recording starts, Teams shows a notification to all participants on the Teams desktop, web, and mobile apps, as well as to people who joined via phone, so that they aware that meeting recording started.

How to stop recording?

To stop Teams meeting recording, go to the meeting controls and click More options (…) and select Stop recording.

After clicking on stop recording, the recording is then processed (which could take awhile), and then it’s ready to play.

Note: The person who started the recording receives an email from Microsoft Stream when the recording is available. Refer the screenshot.

You can play and share meeting recording using Microsoft Teams.

Can I Edit the transcript of a meeting recording in Teams?

Teams meeting recording owner (the person who started the recording) can edit the closed caption transcript after the recording has been uploaded to Microsoft Stream.

1. In Teams, go to the meeting recording in the chat history and click More options and then click on “Open in Microsoft Stream”.

2. On the Microsoft Stream portal, click on more option > Edit.

3. Under Options, go to Captions and click Download file.

4. Download the VTT caption file, make whatever changes you need to it, and save it to your computer.

5. Go back to your browser and uncheck Auto generate a caption file.

6. Click Upload a caption file, click Select file, find your VTT caption file, then click OK.

7. Click Apply.
