20 Oct Microsoft SfB to Teams migration tool v1 is available
As we promised last week that the SfB On-prem/Online to Microsoft Teams migration tool v1 will be available soon. Most of you showed interest in testing this tool, based on the interest we have brought SfB to Teams migration tool v1 for testing and use. Currently, this tool is available as per request basis. You can simply click on the support tab on this blog site menu and request this tool for testing and use. We will make this tool available as on-demand in the upcoming weeks. Tool prerequisite:
- The on-premise User account must be synced with Azure AD and available in Office 365 Admin portal.
- The user account must have Microsoft Teams and Skype for Business Online (plan2) license assigned.
- If migrating user account enabled for enterprise voice (On-prem/Online), then assign Audio Conferencing and Phone system license to a user account before migrating (it may take hours to update the license).
- To migrate user from SfB on-prem to Teams, run this tool on Skype for Business Front End server or machine where SfB Server 2015/2019 admin tool installed.
- To migrate users from SfB online to Teams only run this tool on Windows 10/ Windows Server 2012/2016 with the latest PowerShell module ( 5.1.14409 or latest) and skypeonlineconnector module. [Download Latest PowerShell module : https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=39366]
- The account you are using to run this tool must have SfB on-prem server (CsAdministrator / CsServerAdministrator) as well as Office 365 Global admin or User admin role with SfB Online admin and Teams Server admin permission.
Assumption:
- Skype for Business Server 2015 environment has CU8 applied (minimum) or SfB Server 2019.
- User enabled for enterprise voice using on-prem PSTN when migrating from On-prem
- The user that is getting migrated must have Microsoft Teams, Skype for Business Online (Plan2), Phone system, and Audio-Conferencing license assigned (Phone system and Audio conferencing license require for Enterprise voice-enabled user to migrate to Teams for support enterprise voice).
- Tools applicable to Skype for Business Server 2015, Skype for Business Server 2019 and Skype for Business Online.
How do I use this tool?
You can request this tool through a support request. Once we share the tool, you can simply copy this tool to SfB front End server, or your windows machine based on the migration scenario.
Scenario1: SfB On-prem to Teams Only mode with Enterprise voice-enabled user. [No MFA]
- Copy SfB to Teams migration tool v1 on your Skype for Business front end server.
- Double click SfB to Teams tool and run “prerequisites” to validate PowerShell and SkypeOnlineConnector module install. Refer figure 1.1
- 3. Update the configuration with your tenant name and Skype for Business online URL. Save and exit. Refer to figure 1.2
- 4. Then download User input CSV sample format input file and update user sip address, voice route policy, dial-plan, and Emergency policy for all users who are getting migrated to Teams (Sip address is mandatory to input).
- 5. Then select No MFA and then click on “SFB On-Prem to Teams” and select the input user CSV file that you updated in step six.
- 6. Enter office 365 admin credential and click okay and let tools to take care of everything else. The tool will migrate all users to Teams and write migration status reports (check prerequisites for permission).

Scenario2: SfB On-prem to Teams only mode with MFA Enabled.
Note: Policy assignment/sync takes long time hence do migration on weekend and with some buffer time.
- Double “SfB to Teams migration tool v2” and check out prerequisites and update if necessary.
- Click on the “configuration” tab to update your tenant and SfB online URL.
- Download and update the user input CSV input file and keep handy with with user input.
- Then select migration type as MFA and then,
- Click on the “SFB on-Prem to Teams option and then select the user input file and then enter Office 365 admin credential and let tools take care of everything else.
- Finally, check the result.
Scenario3: SfB Online to Teams only mode.
This scenario is technically granting teams upgrade policy.
- Double “SfB to Teams migration tool v2” and check prerequisites and update.
- Click on the “configuration” tab to update your tenant and SfB online URL.
- Download and update the user CSV input file.
- Click on SFB online to Teams and select user input file enter Office 365 admin credential and let tools take care of everything else.
