News: Teams desktop client will be added for existing users with Office 365

Microsoft announcement “Teams desktop client will be added for existing users with Office 365”

Microsoft has announcement that the Teams desktop client will be added for existing users with Office 365 ProPlus, Microsoft/Office 365 Business, and Microsoft/Office 365 Business Premium apps, this is good effort to improve and streamline users initial experience with Teams and this will increase Teams adoption.

This is really a big announcement and boost for Teams adoption for the origination who has not started Teams client rollout. This announcement message is associated with Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 51452.

How does this affect me?

Once this available, users will have the Teams desktop client installed, by default, when updating their Office client. This can be managed via the Office Deployment Tool and ExcludeAppelement in a configuration.xml file.

Microsoft will roll this out in the second half of June 2019 to Business/Business Premium and Office 365 ProPlus customers on the Monthly update channel. Microsoft will continue the rollout to desktops on Semi-Annual Channel (Targeted) and Semi-Annual Channel in the coming months.

What do I need to do to prepare for this change as admin?

If you would like to have the Teams desktop client installed, you don’t have to wait. User can visit (https://teams.microsoft.com/) and download and install Teams desktop client. If you do nothing, the Teams desktop client will be installed by default, for users, when you receive this update.

Please refer below link on how to manage the install of Teams now (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoftteams/msi-deployment)

Thank you.
