Skype for Business audio quality issue

When you try to connect a Skype for Business conference call or make a peer to peer call, the audio / video quality may be choppy, tinny, or delayed. This causes the meeting or call to be unusable. Audio call quality is depending on many things, like Skype for Business client, computer performance, audio device drivers, network bandwidth/latency, server performance etc.

Resolution:

1. Voice / Video quality indicator: In Skype for Business, you can see Audio/ video call quality indicators to identify how well you’re being heard or viewed.

2. Check if computer is using a wired or wireless connection: A wired connection can provide more bandwidth and stability in most cases and should be the preferred method of connecting if that kind of connection is available. You may consider turning off any wireless antennas to avoid connecting through a wireless connection.

3. Make sure that the audio/video device that is being used is approved and certified to work with Skype for Business client. Here is the Approved device list.

4. Select the correct device, and make sure that the volume is at the appropriate level. In the upper-right area of the window, click the gear icon, click Tools, click Options, and then click Audio Device. Verify that the appropriate device is selected.

5. Adjust the Microphone slider to the volume level that you want. Speak at your usual voice level. The indicator should go no higher than the midway point.

6. Check if user join call / meeting from computer which must not be under resource constraint like, CPU, Memory, and Hard Disk.

7. Check and make sure you don’t have high network latency, high packet drop, use Precall diagnostic tool to see latency and packet drop level.

8. Do not use VPN for Skype for Business call or meeting unless VPN split tunnel implemented, In split tunnel media send over internet instead of VPN tunnel.

9. Most of the time audio / video driver causing issues. Update the Audio and Video drivers. Also check device configuration issues.

10. Use Pre-Call Diagnostic Tool (PCD) to see how the current state of the network might impact the media quality in an upcoming call. PCD shows a graphical view of your network metrics – Network MOS, Packet Loss and Interarrival Jitter which may degraded the audio quality. Refer How to use and install PCD

11. Refer audio quality FAQ which has complete information on how to check / change client setting to get better voice quality.

12. If still issue persist then enable Skype for Business logging and reproduce the issue and send log to you Skype for Business IT Admin. It admin can check if their Skype for Business Servers or service are not under resource constraint, may work with network to improve network performance if network quality bad.

Thank you.
